For our February social night we’ve got two lovely ladies from Fleetwood, who sing and play guitar and various other instruments. They are well known in the region, as Scold’s Bridle – but you can call them Sue and Liz!
Both girls originate from the Fylde coast in Lancashire and having lived near the sea all their lives have witnessed the demise of the fishing industry in the UK, the Fleetwood trawler men being no exception.
Tales of the fishermen and their families before and since that time have given rise to their show ‘We Are The Women’ which tells of the women and children who waved their husbands and fathers off from the quay and the stories of some who were not so lucky to see them return.
Although some songs are sad, there is a genuine warmth of community in many of their accounts. As with all tragedies there is always a humourous side, tears of sadness turn to tears of laughter with their hilarious songs of women who have been tempted off course !
This is a wonderful show and should not be missed !
Liz and Sue will be performing ‘We Are the Women’ for part of the evening, but will also be dipping into the rest of their extensive repertoire!!
Should be a good night to cheer us all up after the weeks of damage and phone lines being down and general winter gloominess!! If anyone has an instrument / song to sing and would be willing to do a short spot – please do come along and let’s make a night of it with as many contributions from people as possible. We’ve got some great talent out there and it’s always lovely when we have a sing song together.
Hope to see some of you there – Val xx
